Application and Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide Gas Sensors in the Chemical Industry
It is reported that an incident involving the illegal dumping of chemical waste occurred in Shunwang Subdistrict, Zhucheng City, Shandong Province on January 31, resulting in the death of 4 people from poisoning. The persons responsible have been taken into police custody.
The accident was caused by hazardous waste transported from other places and dumped into a sewage pipeline, leading to the spread and volatilization of toxic gas from the pipeline and subsequent human poisoning. Despite all-out rescue efforts, the 4 poisoned individuals died, while others with poisoning symptoms are in stable condition and under observation in hospital, with no life-threatening risks.
A preliminary assessment by the medical team identified the toxic substance as highly toxic hydrogen sulfide. Once hydrogen sulfide reaches a certain concentration, even brief inhalation can cause severe harm to the human body. Two medical staff members have developed mild poisoning symptoms while rescuing the affected villagers.
It is stated that the elimination and disposal of hazardous chemical waste at the scene have been completed. The rainwater pipe networks on both sides of the road at the incident site have been fully cleaned; all chemical waste, storage tanks and contaminated soil in the abandoned factory compound involved have been removed. Following evaluations by experts from the Department of Ecology and Environment of Shandong Province and multiple tests using professional equipment, all air quality indicators in the area are within normal ranges.
Hydrogen sulfide is an acutely toxic gas at room temperature. Even at low concentrations, it affects the eyes, respiratory system and nervous system, and inhalation of a small amount of high-concentration hydrogen sulfide can be fatal within a short time

Shenzhen Wuliang Sensor Technology Co., Ltd. distributes industrial-grade electrochemical gas sensors from British brand DDS, covering toxic gases including O₂, CO, H₂S, H₂, NO, NO₂, NH₃, Cl₂, SO₂ and ETO. These sensors are widely used in coal mining, petroleum, chemical, steel, municipal administration and other industries.
The chemical industry has always been an industry with a high concentration of toxic and harmful gases and extremely high risk coefficients. Harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and nitrogen oxides, as well as organic toxic vapors like benzene, aldehydes and ketones, are generated during product processing, posing threats to production safety and environmental protection. Therefore, chemical enterprises must prioritize preventing accidents, eliminating leakage, seepage, dripping and overflow, and improving waste gas recovery and comprehensive utilization during production.

For the production environment in the chemical industry, an industrial environmental monitoring system can be adopted. By installing flammable gas detectors, toxic gas detectors and alarms, real-time monitoring of various gas concentrations and environmental parameters in chemical workplaces can be achieved.
