Gas Concentration Sensors for Vehicle Exhaust Emission Detection
Environmental pollution has attracted growing public attention, alongside the rapidly expanding number of motor vehicles, making vehicle exhaust emissions a widespread concern. Controlling vehicle exhaust requires collective efforts from all citizens. At the source, stricter emission standards for new vehicles and higher fuel quality standards should be enforced. During vehicle operation, supervision over monitoring institutions and high-usage vehicles must be intensified to guarantee compliant exhaust emissions. Additionally, the public should be encouraged to opt for eco-friendly travel. Accelerating the phasing-out of ageing vehicles is also essential to cut air pollution caused by excessive exhaust emissions.
What primary pollutants are contained in vehicle exhaust? For one thing, particulate matter PM2.5 is released. PM2.5 not only pollutes the atmosphere and degrades air quality but also poses severe threats to human health. For another, vehicle exhaust contains various gaseous pollutants, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
How can we detect whether these pollutants meet official emission standards? Gas sensors are required for this task. The specific gas sensors applied to vehicle exhaust monitoring are shown in the figure below.
