How to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Vehicles

  • Do not let the engine idle for a long time while driving.

  • Do not keep the air conditioner on for too long when the vehicle is parked.

  • Even while driving, frequently open the windows for ventilation; stop and rest immediately if you feel unwell.

  • If you feel uncomfortable while driving or riding in an air-conditioned vehicle, open the windows for ventilation promptly.

  • It is strictly forbidden to lie down and sleep in a car with closed doors and windows while the air conditioner is running.

  • During long-distance drives, when using the internal circulation mode, open the windows regularly for ventilation.

Install a Carbon Monoxide Detector

Install a carbon monoxide detector in living spaces where carbon monoxide may be present, and inspect or replace the batteries regularly every year.

Seek Medical Attention Immediately if Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Is Suspected

Once you experience dizziness, nausea or other discomfort and suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, seek medical treatment right away.
If someone is found to have carbon monoxide poisoning, take the following four steps immediately:
  1. Open doors and windows at once to ensure air circulation.

  2. Leave the poisoned environment immediately.

  3. Perform artificial respiration right away if the person’s breathing and heartbeat have stopped.

  4. Call the 120 emergency center promptly and send the poisoned person to hospital for treatment.
