Technical Application Analysis of Sulfur Dioxide Sensors in Flue Gas Emission Monitoring

The Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) is mainly used for continuous monitoring of various industrial waste‑gas sources, including thermal power plants, waste incineration plants, coal and petrochemical plants, paper mills and other industries.

With the growing severity of atmospheric pollution, governments have strengthened supervision over waste‑gas emissions from factories and enterprises. CEMS undertakes the task of monitoring flue‑gas emissions from factories and verifying whether emissions meet statutory standards. CEMS serves two key objectives: measuring the concentration of solid particulate matter and detecting the content of pollutant gases. Among these gases, sulfur dioxide (SO₂) poses substantial hazards to the environment, whose measurement relies on sulfur dioxide gas sensors.

CEMS consists primarily of a gaseous pollutant monitoring subsystem, a particulate matter concentration monitoring subsystem, an emission flow‑parameter monitoring subsystem, as well as a data acquisition, processing and communication system. Sulfur dioxide concentration monitoring falls within the gaseous pollutant monitoring subsystem. The sulfur dioxide gas sensor measures SO₂ in pretreated flue gas to judge whether emission levels satisfy regulatory requirements and whether further desulfurization is necessary. Meanwhile, readings from the sulfur dioxide gas sensor provide data support for subsequent treatment procedures and help improve desulfurization efficiency.
